Ok ladies, are you ready for seriously the most delicious little cocktail that you will be drinking all this fall?
This Honeycrisp Apple Cider Sangria is literally amazing, and the perfect drink for the season. Enjoy it with your best girlfriends for a little celebration, or for a girls night in!
As I mentioned last week, Nik took his “little brother” from his Big Brother, Big Sister Program apple picking. So, obviously, we have a TON of apples (and cider) left over from the excursion.
So what better way to use them all up than with this festive little concoction?
As you know, I am all about moderation. I don’t believe in cutting anything out of your diet (unless, of course, your allergic!), instead I believe that everything should be enjoyed in the proper portions and with control.
And alcohol is a part of that. I love a glass of wine or two every now and then, especially with friends and family. Celebrating the happy moments in life with loved ones over a glass of wine is special and I would never want to miss that. The key is to find balance.
Here are a few tips to finding balance while enjoying life’s little moments.
♥ Always have a full glass of water in between every alcoholic drink. This will help keep you hydrated, and help prevent any headaches or mini-hangovers the following day.
♥ Limit yourself to only 1-2 drinks, a couple of times per week. There’s no need to go overboard and have an entire bottle of wine to yourself. Share a bottle with a few girlfriends and keep each other accountable.
♥ Make sure you eat a healthy dinner full of protein before enjoying your favorite drinks to help prevent you from making unhealthy decisions after you start to get a little tipsy! 😉
♥ Stick with wine, champagne, or light cocktails like cranberry, vodka, and seltzer. They are lower in calories and sugar than tradition cocktails. Much better for your waistline!
Anyway, on to talking more about this delicious sangria!
I used Manage à Trois, which is a sweeter red blend, for this but, really any will do. And I used honeycrisp apples, because they are my absolute favorite, but again, any will do. I also used all-natural, unsweetened Apple Cider straight from the orchard.
Then I added an orange for a little extra flavor and a citrus kick, and some lemon juice to really help bring out the flavors of the apples and orange.
I stuck in a few cinnamon sticks for some of that classic fall flavor, and oh, my, gosh…the cinnamon MAKES this sangria!
To keep this sangria a little bit lighter, I decided not to add any hard alcohol, and just stick with the wine. I did however, add a little splash of prosecco for some bubbles…because…who doesn’t love some bubbly? 😉
- 1 bottle of red wine -- I used Menage à Trois
- 1 cup all-natural apple cider
- 2 apples, sliced -- I used Honeycrisp
- 1 orange, sliced
- juice from 1 lemon
- 3-4 cinnamon stick or to taste
- 1 bottle of prosecco -- I used La Marca
- In a large pitcher or mason jar, combine the red wine, apple and orange slices, lemon juice, and cinnamon sticks. Mix to evenly distribute the ingredients.
- Place the mixture into the fridge and allow it to sit for 6-24 hours to really allow the flavors to develop.
- To serve, pour the sangria into a serving glass and top with a splash of prosecco.
- Don't add the prosecco until just before serving so that you don't lose the bubbles! 😉
