However, a few years ago I made it a goal to switch my lifestyle completely over to an all-natural skincare routine. Why eat all natural, if you slather your body with chemicals that seep into your skin? So one of my all-time favorite products is COCONUT OIL!
I seriously love coconut oil for SO MANY things. Actually, I joke with friends that I would literally sit in a huge tub of coconut oil all day.
It fixes everything: Frizzy hair?… dry skin?… water-proof mascara?… stinky after a workout? –> Coconut oil
I use it on my skin, my hair, my nails, and the obvious one…a healthy cooking oil. So, naturally, I get a huge tub of it off Amazon that’ll last me about a month or so (seriously, I use it THAT much!)
Coconut oil comes from mature coconuts, and has been used for centuries in subtropic regions as a cooking oil and beauty aid. In fact, nearly one third of the globe uses coconut as a food source, medicine, and part of their economy. In fact, some Asian and Pacific populations call the coconut palm tree, “The Tree of Life”.
Coconut oil is now becoming increasingly popular in the United States, as it should be! Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez swear by it for moisturizing their skin. Supermodel Gisele even has her own organic skincare line, with coconut oil as one of the main ingredients.
How to use Coconut Oil for Skin
- Body Lotion – After a shower, scoop out a small amount of coconut oil (a little goes a long way!) and apply it to your skin. It melts as it makes contact with your skin, and easily spreads and absorbs into your skin. Your skin will be so soft and smell SO good! I also love to combine coconut oil with shea butter, like in this whipped body butter, as a deep moisturizer.
- Natural Deodorant – With natural bacteria fighting characteristics, coconut oil makes an AMAZING natural deodorant. I make my own homemade deodorant and I swear it works better than ANY other natural deodorant I’ve ever tried. Try it, and I swear you’ll never go back to store-bought again!
- Deep Conditioning Treatment – Every week or so I like to apply coconut oil from the ends of my hair to the roots (with much less closer to the roots) and leave in for at least 30 minutes. The fatty acids help repair damaged ends of my color treated hair and lock in moisture. After I just shampoo and condition my hair as normal.
- Lip Balm – Apply it straight to you lips for extra moisture. Just be sure you don’t lick it all off or you’ll dry out your lips!!
- Homemade Natural Body Scrub – I LOVE making coconut oil body scrubs. My vanilla coconut body scrub and my Coconut Lime Body Scrub are so luxurious you won’t miss expensive store bought scrubs that tend to have “water” as their first ingredient listed. I use these moisturizing scrubs for my body, feet, or even my face!
- Bath Oil – Spoon out a few tablespoons of coconut oil and drop into warm water for a relaxing and delicious smelling bath. Try adding some homemade bath salts to your bath water for some extra muscle relaxation!
- Make Up Remover – I usually wear waterproof mascara a lot, so that I can go from my workout to running errands quickly. But, if you’ve very used waterproof mascara you know how much of a pain it is to get off. I like to rub a small amount on a cotton swab and rub it gently over our eyes to take the mascara off. It works wonders and is a great moisturizer for the delicate skin around your eyes.
- Cuticle and Hand Moisturizer – Apply a small amount of coconut oil on your hands and massage into your cuticles for super soft hands….especially great after doing dishes or in the winter!
- Massage Oil – Coconut oil is a GREAT oil for massages, it has a nice slick feeling, absorbs slowly into the skin, and a soft fragrance.
I have even read others use coconut oil for a scalp massage to help treat dandruff, and mothers who use it as diaper rash cream for cloth diapers. And another popular technique right now is oil-pulling, where you gargle coconut oil to detoxify the body through the mouth. The list could go on and on!!
Benefits of Coconut Oil on Skin
Coconut oil is almost 90% saturated fat . It is solid at room temperature, but as soon as it makes contact with skin it begins to melt. It absorbs slowly into skin, and penetrates deep into pores. This keeps your skin softer and moisturized much longer than commercial lotions and cream. This is because most commercial lotions and creams are made with mostly water, making you feel moisturized at first, but will eventually dry out your skin.
It also contains natural germ killing lauric acids. Because of this, it’s great for deodorants, and soothing athletes foot, ringworm, or eczema. It is great as a foot moisturizer as well because of these anti-fungal properties. The lauric acid also makes it a great skin cleanser and an ideal make up remover.
And there are fantastic anti-aging benefits as well. The medium chain fatty acids actually help build cells instead of destroy them as ingredients in commercial creams can. Other cosmetics use different chemicals that can oxidize and cause cell damage. Coconut oil is packed with antioxidants that help build and repair skin.
My favorite use for coconut oil is by far using it as a body and face lotion. I use it every day and love the way it makes my skin feel and look. And as if there couldn’t be any more benefits of coconut oil, the fact that there is no animal testing makes me even happier using it!
