Healthy Stovetop Popcorn is easy-peasy, pudding-pie!
Growing up, it seemed that there was nothing that took longer than those three-painstaking-minutes. Both of us, sitting in front of the microwave, waiting for a bag of “Orville Redenbacher” to pop, pop, pop away.
We remember sitting in front of the microwave, watching as our bagged extra-butter popcorn would magically expand. We would then douse our microwavable popcorn with even MORE melted butter and sprinkle salt all over.
Nothing was more satisfying than fresh popped popcorn, on a hot summer night. We would stay up late watching movies, eating popcorn, and talking about who knows what 13 year old girls talk about…
Our taste in popcorn has drastically changed though. With both of us being so health conscious and very much against chemicals in our food, we have started making our own popcorn, stovetop.
And, let us tell you, it’s AMAZING. Not to mention it takes only a minute longer than those chemical-filled bags. It tastes so much fresher, and you can control you toppings more (and yes, we still add butter…only a little now though!)
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil
- Toppings – we use a tablespoon or so of real melted butter and a small sprinkle of sea salt
- Heat coconut oil in a large pot over a medium-high heat.
- Add 2 kernels into the hot oil and wait for them to pop.
- Once they pop, your oil is ready.
- Remove the 2 kernels from the oil and add the rest of your kernels to the pot in a single layer and cover with your lid.
- Shake the pot a few times and wait for popping.
- Occasionally shaking your pot, wait for the popping to start slowing down.
- Once it slows down, remove it from the heat and pour the popcorn in a large bowl.
- Cover with toppings and enjoy!
