Healthy Homemade S’mores – Easy and Tasty Recipes!

Share Post:

S’mores are one of those classic treats that just make you happy, right? Gooey marshmallows, melty chocolate, and crunchy graham crackers…yum! But let’s be honest—traditional s’mores aren’t exactly the healthiest snack around. So, I’ve come up with a way to enjoy s’mores without feeling guilty: healthy homemade s’mores!

Why Go Homemade?

First things first—why bother making homemade s’mores when you can just buy all the ingredients at the store? Well, a lot of store-bought options are loaded with artificial flavors, preservatives, and unnecessary sugars. By making your own, you get to control what goes in, and I promise it’s not as hard as it sounds.

The Graham Crackers

The foundation of any good s’more is the graham cracker. A while back, I created a recipe for homemade graham crackers using coconut sugar and gluten-free oat flour. They’re super easy to make, deliciously crunchy, and way better for you than anything you’ll find on the shelf.

Plus, once you try them, you’ll probably never want to go back to the store-bought kind again!

Store-bought graham crackers often have all sorts of unnecessary junk—artificial flavorings, high-fructose corn syrup, you name it. With homemade ones, you’re getting pure, simple ingredients that taste amazing.

Now let’s talk marshmallows. Most commercial marshmallows are basically just sugar and chemicals. I’ve tried making vegan marshmallows before, and let’s just say it was a bit of an adventure. If you’re up for it, homemade marshmallows can be a fun project.

But if you’re short on time or patience, look for some good-quality handmade marshmallows at the store. Whole Foods usually has some great options.

Want a Healthier Option?

Try swapping marshmallows for grilled banana slices! They’re naturally sweet, deliciously gooey, and add a fun twist to your s’mores. Plus, they’re way better for you.

Let’s Not Forget the Chocolate

Ah, chocolate—everyone’s favorite part, right? For healthier s’mores, I go with high-quality dark chocolate, preferably 70% cacao or higher. Dark chocolate has less sugar and more antioxidants, so you get all the deliciousness with some added health benefits. My go-to is Ghirardelli 72% dark chocolate, but use whatever you like best.

Fun Fact! Dark chocolate is actually good for you in moderation! It’s full of antioxidants that can help improve heart health, so feel free to indulge a little.

Tips for the Best S’mores Ever

No campfire? No problem! Here are 5 ways to roast marshmallows at home! 😍❤️‍🔥 Save and follow for more fun ideas and yummy recipes! ❤️ #TheBakerMama ⚠️Always be so careful when using fire to roast marshmallows. Marshmallows are easily flammable and if not roasted with care, they can create a fire hazard.⚠️ 1️⃣ Fireplace – this is as close to a campfire as it gets! Light the fireplace and roast the marshmallow on a long skewer over the fire, but not in it! You want it to be close enough to roast the outside of the marshmallow and slowly melt the inside. Roast to desired toastiness! Be careful not to let the marshmallow drip into your fireplace. 2️⃣ Stovetop – this is such an easy indoor option! Turn the stovetop to medium-high heat. If roasting over a gas flame, hold the marshmallow about an inch from the flame for a charred marshmallow and about 2 inches for a lightly browned roast. If roasting over an electric flattop, hold the marshmallow close to the heating element and rotate by turning the skewer until the marshmallow reaches the desired level of doneness. 3️⃣ Grill – if we already have the grill going for our meal, we love making s’mores on it for dessert! Turn the grill to high heat and roast the marshmallows on a long skewer over the hot flame until of desired toastiness. 4️⃣ Microwave – you won’t get a roasted marshmallow this way, but it will be melty! Place a graham cracker, piece of chocolate and a marshmallow on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on high for 10-15 seconds, watching it carefully as the marshmallow will puff up. Remove from the microwave and top with another graham cracker. These are best enjoyed right away! 5️⃣ Oven – the oven is such a great way to roast perfectly golden marshmallows! Heat the oven to broil (about 500°F). Place graham crackers and chocolate on a baking sheet and top each with a marshmallow. Roast for 1 to 2 minutes, watching carefully! Once the marshmallows are at your desired toastiness, remove them from the oven and press another graham cracker on top of each roasted marshmallow. #smores #marshmallow #marshmallows #roastedmarshmallows #kitchenhack #cookinghack #howto #yum

  • Go Slow with the Marshmallows: Toasting them slowly makes them perfectly gooey inside without burning the outside.
  • Experiment with Flavors: Try adding a thin layer of nut butter, some sea salt, or even a sprinkle of cinnamon for a fun twist.
  • Make it Social!: S’mores are best enjoyed with friends. So grab a group, light up a fire, and get roasting!
